Dumpster sizes explained

Roll-off dumpsters come in five standard sizes. They share the same 8-foot width — what changes is length and height, which sets both volume and how much driveway you need. Here is each size at a glance.

10 yard

Dimensions ~12' × 8' × 3.5', about 2 tons included, ~3 pickup loads. The smallest can and the only one for heavy material — concrete, dirt, brick. Also great for small cleanouts and bathroom remodels. Fits a typical driveway with room to spare.

15 yard

Dimensions ~14' × 8' × 4.5', about 2.5 tons, ~4–5 pickup loads. The flexible middle size — single-layer roof tear-offs, kitchen remodels, and medium cleanouts. Fits a standard driveway.

Dimensions ~16' × 8' × 5', about 3 tons, ~6–8 pickup loads. The right call for roughly 60% of residential jobs: two-layer roofing, full remodels, and large cleanouts. Fits most residential driveways.

30 yard

Dimensions ~22' × 8' × 6', about 4 tons, ~9–12 pickup loads. Built for volume — whole-house cleanouts, new construction, and major renovations. Needs full clearance and ~60 ft of straight access to drop.

40 yard

Dimensions ~22' × 8' × 8', about 5 tons, ~12–16 pickup loads. The largest can, for commercial jobs and big construction. Reserve it for bulky, lighter debris — never concrete or dirt, which would exceed road weight long before it is full.

All five sizes share the same footprint width (8 ft). Height and length grow with capacity, so the bigger sizes need more vertical and straight-line clearance for the truck.

Frequently asked

Roll-off dumpsters come in 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40 cubic-yard sizes. The 20-yard is the most popular for residential work.

About 16 ft long, 8 ft wide, and 5 ft high — roughly 6–8 pickup-truck loads of capacity, with about 3 tons of weight included.

Both are 22 ft long and 8 ft wide; the 40-yard is taller (8 ft vs 6 ft), so it holds more volume. The 40-yard suits bulky light commercial debris, while the 30-yard handles most large residential jobs.
